Notes:
  1. All the required fields have to be filled in for a syllabus to meet the standard format specified by the University. However, to allow flexibility, you may create a word file without filling in all fields. But you shall make use of the word file created and fill in remaining items using WORD before the syllabus is submitted for formal approval procedures.

  2. The syllabus is normally in English. The syllabus of a Chinese course can be presented in either way:
    a) written in Chinese with an English version, or
    b) basically in English, but with information in Chinese for some items, e.g. course titles, course description, indicative content, readings, etc.

  3. Due to technical constraints, features for formatting text (e.g. put book titles in italics) are not applicable.

  4. You might take a look at sample course syllabuses as included in the Academic Quality Assurance Manual for reference.

Course Details

Note: The letter code contains 3 letters as listed in Academic Regulations.
Note: Most courses are term courses of 3 credits under the Credit-based System. Therefore, if a course is not a term course, it has to be stated explicitly in the syllabus.
Note: If sectional approach is adopted, indicate the number of hours/ week, otherwise, indicate the number of hours per week for each activity, e.g. 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of tutorial.
Examples: University required language, Common Core/Cluster X in Core Curriculum, Foundation/Core/Stream required/Stream elective in X Stream, etc.
Note: If a course has a prerequisite, a student must have taken and passed it before enrolling in the course concerned.
Note: If a course has a co-requisite, a student must take both courses in the same term.
Note: If a course has another course as exclusion, a student is allowed to enroll only in one of the two courses during his/her period of study, unless he/she fails any one.

Remember that the student will read this to gather information on the course so academic language needs to be moderated against comprehensibility for the student.

Learning Outcomes

This is where Bloom’s taxonomy applies. At undergraduate level, there is an expectation that the majority of learning outcomes will address the higher level intellectual activity. The following learning outcomes have employed Bloom’s taxonomy for illustration purposes. Below are the keywords:
  Describe - Bloom’s Knowledge.
  Discuss - Bloom’s Comprehension
  Relate - Bloom’s Synthesis
  Assess - Bloom’s Evaluation

Measurement of Learning Outcomes

The measurement of learning outcomes requires that the course developer provides examples of specific approaches to addressing each of the learning outcomes. For example, if a learning outcome or more than one learning outcome is to be measured by a quiz, the developer should state the format. If by a group project and presentation, the developer should indicate whether or not all the group are expected to participate and the requirements for the project.

Important Notes:
(1) Students are expected to spend a total of 9* hours (i.e. 3* hours of class contact and 6* hours of personal study) per week to achieve the course learning outcomes.
(2) Students shall be aware of the University regulations about dishonest practice in course work, tests and examinations, and the possible consequences as stipulated in the Regulations Governing University Examinations. In particular, plagiarism, being a kind of dishonest practice, is “the presentation of another person’s work without proper acknowledgement of the source, including exact phrases, or summarised ideas, or even footnotes/citations, whether protected by copyright or not, as the student’s own work”. Students are required to strictly follow university regulations governing academic integrity and honesty.
(3) Students are required to submit writing assignment(s) using Turnitin.
(4) To enhance students’ understanding of plagiarism, a mini-course “Online Tutorial on Plagiarism Awareness” is available on https://pla.ln.edu.hk/.
